When Habs GM Bob Gainey was hired by the Canadians back in 2003, fans thought the days of early golf seasons would be a thing of the past. They patiently sat back and waited for his 5 year plan to take effect. And to fans, Gainey, along with former Habs coach Guy Carbonneau were second only to God when the team showed stats of old back in 2008. But the wind was quickly knocked out of their sails after they struggled to capture a play-off spot last season and were swept in the first round.

The new Montreal Canadiens will be reporting to training camp this month..but does “new” mean better? Since the end of last season, there have been many changes, including the hiring of a new head coach and assistant coach. Most of the old players have been replaced with some, not so statistically great, new players. Take for example, center Scott Gomez whose nearly 8 million dollar a year contract saw many fans raising a questioning eyebrow. Gomez, who won the Calder trophy with the New Jersey Devils back in 2000, has posted less than spectacular numbers since then, scoring only 16 goals with the Rangers the past 2 seasons. The Habs also acquired Left-winger Travis Moen, who had just 7 goals and nine assists in 82 games with San Jose and Anaheim last year. Other than Mike Cammalleri, who experienced a banner season last year with the Flames, scoring 39 goals and 43 assists, there are no real stand-out players signed onto the Canadiens this season.

Does Gaineysee something in the new players and team fans and critics don’t?? Only time will tell but one thing is for sure…when all is said and done, there is only one way to see a Habsgame and that is LIVE.
